Facelift @ 1460 Main Street

Postby fsu813 » Mon Sep 24, 2012 9:50 pm

1460 Main Street will be getting a facelift on Oct 6th, courtesy of Operation New Hope and LISC's E.P.I.C. initiative.

Inspired by Miami's Wynwood Walls, the building will first be painted by volunteers, then professional artist Dustin Harewood will be installing mural panels.

They have plenty of volunteers, but would still appreciate volunteers IF they can bring ladders and/or paint rollers with extending handles. (otherwise there won't be much to do!)

Saturday, Oct 6th @ 9am.

Perhaps this could be the start of a Main Street mural trend . . . .

Is it planned to clean the paint off of the transoms? That would do wonders for the building also

As a bit of trivia, this building was the original Brumos Porsche dealership, opening in 1962. The larger building in the back was their race shop for many years. Brumos was for many years, the premier Porsche racing team winning all over the world, all from this little shop in Springfield.

In 1962 Brundage opened his first Porsche showroom at 5th & Main St. in downtown Jacksonville

I probably should state that this picture is not of the right building. There is one somewhere, I'll try to find it. Still, kind of fun to think that a lot of important races were won by cars from Springfield. Might be fun too of the artist uses that fact in his work. certainly as the Main Street Cruises are so successful.

How much fun would it be to have the vintage Porche cars painted on the building? I love it that this building will get a face lift.

I thought that would be a cool tie-in as well, especially with the Main St Cruise being such a hit.

Fantastic. This is a great little building and will now add to Main street even empty.

I do wonder if MCCD will come along and tag those mural windows as graffiti? Hopefully not.

Looks great and I am happy it was done, but there is something about painting and maintaining buildings for an absentee commercial landlord using grant money and volunteers that bugs me. Petra has been holding real development along Main Street hostage for years. Like I said, it looks great and I really am glad it was done, it just does not sit well with me.

Yardchick: I totally get what you are saying. Not sure how often I felt that way. I justify it as "hostage rescue".

As someone once explained to me, companies like Petra have absolute no interest in making Main Street succeed at this point as they still intend to buy more, and any improvement they make before they got the "whole set" would drive up prices.
