1204 Walnut St.

Lovely double porch was removed today. Joel McEachin called and asked me to retrieve the beautiful turned upper columns.

Like most things in the universe, it was transported in the Poppin's van and are now safely stored. The columns will be returned to 1204 Walnut if and or when the house is sold/repaired/whatever crisis it is going through is over. The columns will NOT be sold or given away under any circumstances, don't bother to ask. They belong to the house (however long the house is standing). Just letting everyone know. If you buy the house, contact me...your columns are waiting for you.

Oh, no! That house was for sale for $99,000 a couple of years ago. It has incredible woodwork inside. My daughter was salivating over it. I thought it had been sold. Darn, why can't I win the lottery?

This partial demolition is exactly how unsafe housing issues ought to be treated in a historic district.

The porches were taken by MCCD as an emergency -- they were posing a threat.

MCCD worked with Joel and the contractor to save whatever historically significant pieces could be saved. Joel got in touch with PSOS to retrieve and store the components to be used once again on the same house.

While we are all sad that the porches had to come off, at least the rest of the house remains AND the pieces will be made available to the next owner.

It is important for the city especially MCCD to work with Joel and the neighborhood to save the houses and to establish the trust needed to work in harmony.

Thank you for your efforts in the case.

I understand that's what they used to do, and still the right answer instead of demolishing the whole house for a bad porch. I just thought this house was already in loving hands, and was surprised, that's all. You can put the porch back. We did some of that ourselves.

It's a win. The house is spared.
